Generic Surplus and Ace Hotel Palm Springs reunite this summer to present an innovative take on the Borstal shoe through the eyes of artist, Steven Harrington. Drawing cues from Southern Californian culture and the unique Palm Springs landscape, the collection reflects the color scheme and textures of the astonishing mountains, the cool blues of the pools and the desert that surrounds the hotel. Incorporating the cotton weave patterned fabric Rattan into the staple style’s design and featuring graphic artist Steven Harrington’s artwork on the insole and shoe box, the result is an original, easy-to-wear shoe perfect for poolside as well as a stroll through the desert sand.
"Just last summer I worked on a three day long art project out in Joshua Tree California. We needed a place to stay overnight to recharge and rest, so my introduction to the Ace Hotel in palm springs made for the perfect desert oasis," adds Harrington. "When Generic Surplus approached me to collaborate on the Ace Hotel project this year, it seemed like the perfect fit. So once again, I find myself exploring the endless amounts of possibilities the desert has to offer."
Come celebrate this unique collaboration at the Ace Hotel Palm Springs during the Coachella music festival as Generic Surplus hosts a poolside pop-up shop over both weekends. The desert-themed destination spot will be chock full of festival essentials as part of a larger capsule collection designed by Harrington himself. The store will not only feature every colorway in this rare collaboration but also tees, tanks, bandannas and towels drawing on the same desert pallet.
